“It Was Better Being Lonely”
(Part 10 in the ongoing saga of Wayne and Isabella, the Ghosts with Relationship Problems)
He lays there like a lump, snoring wheezily
And Isabella doesn’t get how he can sleep so easily
The stress of their life keeps her awake into the night
Staring out in the dark until the first break of light.
So much has changed, and she can’t remember why,
the thought of being alone used to make her want to cry.
The concept feels like a dream, like a vision from a past life
As now she’s with this unbearable man, stuck as his wife.
Isabella’s mind wanders, and she tries to imagine the day
When they can admit it’s not working, and go their separate way
But that won’t happen soon, and they’ll both continue the charade
Pretending not to be miserably unhappy, living together as a fraud.
Tears quietly stream down her face, and she wishes that if only
She could travel back in time, and return to just being lonely.
HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY EVERYONE! :-D

“One Last Regret”
(Part of the ongoing saga of Wayne and Isabella, the “Ghost Couple with Relationship Problems”)
As the taxi pulls up, Isabella looks back at Wayne watching through the window, and their eyes meet for one last time.
Having agreed on the divorce, and with Isabella moving out, it hits Wayne that it really is all over… the fighting, the heartbreak, the marriage, all of it has finally come to an end.
But as he watches her leave, tears welling up in his eyes, all he can think about is all of the unsaid insults he still had left to say. Extremely biting, hurtful comments that prey on her insecurities and would really destroy her… ugh! He so wishes he had a reason to say them right now; if only maybe they could have just one more argument…!
There are so many things he can’t stand about her, and he only got to tell her a fraction of them. It simply isn’t fair.
It’s a shame, really.
The only solution, Wayne realizes, is to date someone just like Isabella so that he has all of the insults ready to go.

Wayne The Ghost has been divorced from his ex-wife Isabella for a solid year now, and as he tip toes back into the dating world he is trying to be as aware as possible of any and all ‘warning signs’— over-possessiveness, intellectual insecurity, being raised as an only child, etc etc.
He knows in the past he has been guilty of ignoring the various hints that a relationship won’t work out (in his defense, it was because he is stupid), so Wayne is determined to not let history repeat itself.
As he dates each new ghost though, he finds that while they seem so different at first, they all eventually remind him of his ex-wife— but what is the connection?
And then, as he’s on the fifth date with a nice ghost lady who has no female friends, he finally realizes the answer— the warning sign they all shared, was that they liked him.
That warning sign alone reveals deep-seeded psychological problems and personality flaws that simply can’t be worked around.
The obviousness of it all makes Wayne lose his appetite, but he takes solace in the fact that at least now he knows that if he ever wants to have a happy relationship, he just has to find someone who can’t stand him.

Mr. and Mrs. Wayne and Isabella The Ghost, miserably married for 3 years now (and 4 years before the divorce), share another conversation-less long car ride to her horrible parent’s house.
Thankfully, they both like the same music, so the radio fills the gap their inability to communicate creates.
Having grown tired of talking to each other YEARS ago, their shared tastes in music, television, and film gives them a life raft that the relationship clings to… and totally obscures the fact that they otherwise have nothing in common.
Their entire marriage is the by-product of enjoying the same things that total strangers made, and tricking themselves into believing that this is some sort of genuine connection.

While neither seemed to be happy to be dating the other for quite some time, Wayne and Isabella the Ghost stayed together out of habit more than anything else.
With an anniversary coinciding with a planned vacation to the beach, Isabella started leaving heavy hints about a need for the relationship to become more “for sure”. Wayne, wanting to avoid a fight about where the relationship was going, decided that it was about that time… because “that’s what ya do”. He had to propose.
Plus, if he DIDN’T, they’d maybe have to break-up soon, he’d have to find a new apartment… it’s such a hassle.
Wayne proposes on the beach as the sun sets over the vast endless ocean, like you’re supposed to. Isabella, feigning surprise, squeals with joy because it’s the expected response and immediately calls her parents on her cell-phone.
Walking back towards the car, the deed done, an empty feeling creeps into Wayne’s gut. He ignores it for 7 more years.

Early on in their relationship, long before the marriage troubles that plague them today, Wayne the Ghost did not fully realize a warning sign that would have clued him in to the problems that would later develop.
Deep into a long telephone conversation with his future wife, Isabella the Ghost, Wayne tells her a story— a personal story, one that he has never told anyone else before… a story that he has never even said out loud to himself. His voice trembles as he chokes out the words.
Isabella, not listening, interrupts and says “OH! You won’t believe what Liz did earlier—” and goes on to recount a long and boring third hand story.
Wayne and Isabella, neither a good match for the other, had plenty of chances to realize this well in advance.

Wayne is with his friends on a rare night out on the town— since he started dating Isabella his friends have barely seen him, so they’re eager to have their friend back even if only for one night. But all evening all he can do is talk about her… how amazing she is, how cool, smart, beautiful; he is smitten. He wants his friends to understand why he feels this way about Isabella.
But as he builds her up to his friends, he gradually starts exaggerating everything about her. By the time he is done, he’s created an imaginary person that sets a standard impossible for the real Isabella to match.
Over the years, as the trouble begins, he thinks back to this idealized version of Isabella that he told his friends about, and slowly realizes she never existed.
And it was his fault for creating this fantasy in his head.

Years after Wayne the Ghost’s divorce from his ex-wife Isabella, he is remarried to a younger woman and has 3 cute kids. They run around the living room and play while he prepares food for dinner.
Wayne nicks his hand with the knife as he cuts the carrots, and he scolds himself for holding the knife incorrectly— and suddenly thoughts of Isabella flood his memories, and he remembers all of the times he scolded her paternally for holding the knife wrong, and how she would surely cut herself. She never did.
He thinks back to their life together, and it feels so strange… so hard to comprehend it all. It feels like another existence.
Wayne finishes preparing dinner, and eats with his family.

It’s pretty much the only thing they can stand to do with the other, though every once in a while they’ll think about spending a night doing something different before wordlessly agreeing it just isn’t worth the trouble.
