"Living the Lie"
The motel room’s heater burns a mysterious hot sour smell that mixes in with the previous occupant’s lingering body odor and cigarette smoke, creating a bouquet of sadness that burrows itself into Michael Carini’s nostrils.
With another long day of driving ahead of him, Michael knows he should be trying to sleep, but he can’t help but just sit and dwell. He’s often dreamed of meeting his biological family, but now that he’s almost about to he isn’t quite sure how he feels, which makes him then further dwell on WHY he isn’t quite sure of how he feels.
He can feel the crustiness of the carpet even through his socks, and makes a mental note to be sure to take the filthy duvet off of the bed before he gets to sleep. He wonders about all of the half-truths and lies he had been told about his biological family over the years, trying to parse out the fact from fiction, and now that he knows his biological father committed suicide, it’s like finding a missing puzzle piece that he didn’t know he needed.
The motivations behind the lies intrigue Michael, as he tries to picture himself in their shoes, and whether they thought they were lying for Michael’s comfort or for their own.
He wishes he could have met him, his dad, just so he’d know. He realizes that this is an obvious wish, but it didn’t need to be a dramatic meeting, just a moment… it could maybe explain so much.
Michael turns off the heater, deciding that he’d rather just be cold.
