The Daily Doodles |
My name is David Michael Chandler, and everyday I will post a Daily Doodle with a story attached to it. Everything you see here has been written, drawn, and coloured all on my lonesome. I hope you enjoy them, or die trying. Please E-mail anytime at thedailydoodles@gmail.com |
“Late Night TV”
Creeping down the hallway,
He turns on the television quietly.
After everyone has gone to bed,
He looks at what they don’t want him to see.
The real education starts after hours,
So at boring stupid school he does awfully…
But he’ll learn everything he ever needs to know,
Thanks to watching Late Night TV.

Young Baron Laroux reminds himself that he needs to stay calm.
Having heard the window break, he was able to turn on his homemade Internal-Noise-Insulation suit before the roaming herd of Assassin’s Needles could detect his presence…
Sent by the Robots to clear out any remaining organic life, the Assassin’s Needles could detect not only movement but heartbeats, joints creaking, quiet breathing, stomachs grumbling, and even the sound and pattern of blinking— the human body is inherently quite noisy. The Internal-Noise-Insulation suit dampens these tell-tale signs of being alive, and makes a human somewhat invisible to the Robotic eye.
Baron has seen these Needles kill his family, his friends… even if they were wearing an INI-Suit sometimes. As one of the Needles passes mere inches in front of his face, Baron desperately wishes he could just grab it and snap it in half— the other Needles would certainly kill him, but so what? What sort of life is this, anyway?
He promised his parents he’d stay alive as long as possible, but this isn’t really living… it’s only a matter of time before he makes a mistake, is detected, and feels the sharp poisoned Assassin’s Needle pierce his skull, ending it all. It’s inevitable.
Everyone seems to die quickly, at least… efficiently. It can’t be that bad.
Baron fights the urge to sigh as he decides that he will just have to wait for that mistake to happen, and he won’t make himself die on purpose.
At this rate, he won’t have to wait long anyways.

Danny did not like Mr. Gibbons… in fact, he and other kids in the neighborhood had often said they outright hated him. While he had heard his parents’ whispers about Mr. Gibbons alcoholism and depression, Danny didn’t care about that— all he knew was that Mr. Gibbons was a jerk.
He always had his lights off for Halloween, so of course the kids had to egg him. Whenever Danny had to sell magazines subscriptions to raise money for school, he knew Mr. Gibbons would be the last to donate. The other parents complained about his overgrown and often dead lawn, which is important for some reason, and his older brother told him that once a friend of his actually went inside Mr. Gibbons’ house to borrow a plunger and the house was too hot and smelled awful.
The worst offense, though, was when Danny was playing with his remote control car in front of his house and Mr. Gibbons drove too fast around the corner and ran over it. Even though he knew what he had done, he didn’t even offer to buy Danny a new one… didn’t even say sorry!
Danny knows he wished Mr. Gibbons would die after that happened, but… it feels strange to think why he’d say such a thing. The words didn’t mean that much before.
Half of Mr. Gibbons’ skull is blasted across the interior of his car, and his normal scowl hangs expressionless to the side. Danny can’t tear his eyes away; he’d never seen a dead body before. Death was a far away concept to him.
Is he supposed to cry? He isn’t sure how he is meant to feel.
The twisted dead look on his neighbor’s face, blood still freshly dripping down, just sitting in the front seat of his car… He never meant it when he wished Mr. Gibbons would die. He swears he didn’t.

The first day of 7th grade was hard enough for young Danny Ritter— he was already friendless, teased constantly, and miserable that his peaceful lonely summer is now over. To add to that, his new locker is haunted.
Left in the locker is a red baseball hat with the initials MJW… Danny realizes it is the hat of Mikey J. Wilson, the friendless quiet 7th grader who killed himself last year. Danny remembers seeing him in this hallway, and his mind wanders to a time back in 4th grade when he joined in with other kids picking on poor Mikey. He doesn’t know why he did that; he liked Mikey fine. Danny didn’t want to be so mean.
Guilt and sadness overwhelm Danny, and he tries to remove the hat, but something grabs it back. It won’t budge from the locker.
A dim blue ghostly outline of Mikey J. Wilson fades into view, and just stares at Danny with no apparent emotion.
The Ghost of Mikey is just as quiet and awkward as the living version.
