“The Orbit of the Burial Moon”
It’s been 3 years since The Boy Who Was Born in Space buried his parents on that tiny moon, and for the third time in those 3 years, the Boy has found himself somehow crossing paths with the moon yet again… even though the Boy, his Robot, and their ship should be hundreds of parsecs away.
While at first the Boy assumed that he was subconsciously going in circles because some part of him wasn’t yet ready to leave his parents behind (the spaceship’s onboard educational videos he’s been watching have led him to believe this was a possibility), his Droid quickly calculated that the moon was actually a tiny orphan planet; a rogue planetary mass that wandered the galaxy with no set orbit, and its path through space had happened to correspond with their own.
However, now the burial moon has entered an actual orbit as the tiny spheroid gets pulled between the gravity of a distant gas giant and a nearby red terrestrial planet, causing the moon to complete a dizzying full orbit every 31 seconds.
His parent’s final resting place had finally found a home.
The Boy knew that one might indulge themselves in believing there was some sort of poetic significance in discovering that his parents’ burial moon was an orphan (just like the Boy himself is), but his more logical side knew that the universe is simply a series of events without meaning, and this was just one of them.
The parallels between him and the burial moon are a mildly interesting curiosity, but crafting some sort of life narrative out of random chance… it’s folly.
The Boy finds himself wishing that it WAS his subconscious bringing him back to the Burial Moon over and over, because then at least it’d show he’s feeling something for them… like a normal boy. It’d be nice to know he missed them, on some level, and that perhaps his parents’ burial moon finding a home could be a good omen for himself.
But, he knows that the galaxy doesn’t exist just to give one Boy’s life “meaning”. The universe doesn’t work that way.
The Boy Who Was Born in Space joins his Droid back on their ship, and never returns to the burial moon ever again.

“The Prayer to the Aliens”
O’ my dear, sweet Aliens, I pray to thee to take me away
Beam me up to your ship and we’ll have a space holiday.
While I might be a human girl, I can learn Alien stuff fast
And we can make me being an Earthling, a thing of the past.
To sweeten the deal, you can take my parents to dissect
They got all sorts of tissue, and lotsa’ organs to inspect.
Maybe evaporate my big sister, or my little brother, the pest
And I’ll brag that I got go to with you, cuz you like me best.
We’ll be the greatest of friends, having adventures in space
Criss-crossing the universe with big smiles on our face
Solving galactic mysteries, finding new planets to explore
I’ll never have a reason to be sad anymore.
And even when they all tell me that you’re really not out there…
That you don’t hear my prayers, and if ya did you don’t care…
I’ll always believe in you truly, with all my 8 year old heart
And after you finally rescue me, our lives together can start.
Amen.

“The Video Phone”
She can sense him there on the other end of the feed, not picking up, pretending he’s not home… too cowardly to face her, to explain himself.
Sitting in his dark, dirty, pathetic apartment, just staring at her flashing pixelated image as the shrill ringing fills his tiny room… She doesn’t care how long it takes, she’s going to make him deal with this. He has to stare at her face on the video phone, and know she’s not defeated. And he will feel that shame, and he will know. He’ll know.
All of the lies, the secrets, he can’t just hide from it. His excuses, the flimsy rationalization… he can fool himself with that nonsense, but she won’t give him that satisfaction. He doesn’t get to have that.
She knows he’s there, staring at her, trying to think up some new lie to spin. Some way to get out of this.
The feed disconnects once more, and her reflection looks back at her upon the dark, empty monitor. Waiting just long enough so he can think it’s over, she types in his number, stares back at the screen, and calls again.

“The Sea of Dead Children”
Margaret Jane died whilst in a slumber so deep
Tragically murdered in her bed as she was fast asleep
She opens her eyes with a fright, hoping it ‘twas just a dream
But the water fills her lungs, drowning out her blood curdling scream
For if a poor child dies before the age of eleven
They don’t go to Hell, and they don’t go to Heaven
The Sea of Dead Children becomes their new home
Upon the ocean’s floor, their souls eternally roam.
The ghostly hands grip tight, pulling Margaret Jane down
Even though she already died, her soul has to drown.
Dead children are always excited to play with someone new
Since the afterlife can be boring, so it’s something to do. :-)
Deeper and deeper she goes, into the dark depths of the sea
To play with every child who ever died, for the rest of eternity

“Crossing Paths with a Robot in the Dense Forest”
(Dedicated to my niece Penelope, who was born Saturday!)
As Young Penelope the Girl went through a nice walk in the woods
To hide after murdering her enemies (as every Penelope the Girl shoulds),
She crossed paths with a Robot, one of those Crypotomechalogical myths
Somehow created before time began, by long extinct Droidsmiths.
Penelope stares up at the Droid, and the Droid stares right back
And both just stare at each other, wondering who will attack.
Robots have long been scared of kids, the most illogical of mankind
There’s no sense in their ways, with their cruel fickle mind.
Penelope doesn’t know this, of course, and she stands frozen where she stands.
Imagining the noise her bones will make, when crushed by steel hands.
But as she gazes into the Robot’s optic lens, and it peers into her own,
They realize they both want the same thing: to be left alone.
So Penelope bows, while the Droid curtsies, neither wanting any war,
And they each go their separate ways, their paths crossing nevermore.

“The Descent into Space”
Cordelia Gable tries to silence the incessant, useless beeping of her ship’s controls, but the piercing electronic BLEEOOP, BLEEEEEOOOP continues.
She already knows that there’s an emergency, she doesn’t need the God damned warning sirens going off to remind her. She feels like she’s being driven mad by the distraction… all of the stupid flashing lights and noises. Pointless.
With the fuel leak, there isn’t much time for a decision to be made— stay connected to the main vessel and risk igniting the minerals she’s towing back from the asteroid belt and ride the remaining inertia (hopefully) back to Earth, OR… disconnect and save the precious cargo but sentence herself to a sure, solitary death floating in space.
Cordelia had already decided years ago what she’d do in this sort of situation… if she ruins the cargo, she’ll not only face heavy fines, but she’ll lose her career, her certification, possibly even jail time… even if she is rescued, it’s pointless. Her life is over.
So she presses the purge button, and feels the pressure change suck the air out of her ears as her cockpit unlocks itself from the vessel and ejects backwards, descending into open space.
At least the God damned beeping will stop. Dying will be worth it just for that.
Unfortunately, the endless flashing and beeping continues, as she she drifts off into the black emptiness of the Milky Way.

“A Bit Too Much”
As his hand melts away into a chunky collagen gravy and insects pop from blisters planted by the eggs of his ancestor’s mistakes and his eyeballs peel away layer by layer while the universe implodes upon itself and starts attacking the idea of his existence and the nice pleasant high feeling fades away and starts transitioning into that awful too high feeling…
Brian Sonksen realizes he MIGHT have taken a bit too much.

“The Escape Pod”
It’s a shame it had to be this way.
As Mozzy the Brown Dog and Deuce the Jack Russell watch their master’s ship explode into a thousand pieces from the safety of the escape pod, they wonder to themselves… are we to blame?
Are we bad dogs?
We tried to wake up our master, we yipped and we yapped, and it’s not our fault that they didn’t understand it meant we were warning them about the fuel leak. It was strongly implied.
We really did our part.
To be honest, I mean, Master was a good owner… but maybe if they would have played with us more, perhaps we wouldn’t have been so tempted to chew through the fuel line. This was totally preventable.
Even still… it’s bittersweet to have it end this way. To not have a human to call your own is so excruciatingly embarrassing; it’s no way for a dog to live. But as the explosion of their former home and the tiny bits and pieces of their Master fades away into they darkness of space, they realize… we’re free.
And that’s what Master would have wanted, if they weren’t exploded.
I don’t know… maybe we are bad dogs :-/
Mozzy, ashamed, looks anxiously for a table to hide under as he waits for a scolding that will never come.
And Deuce, for lack of knowing what else to do and feeling equal parts optimism and fear for the future, simply wags his tail.

“The Long Journey Across the Galaxy”
After hearing the hiss and click of the last hibernation tank as it pressurizes and seals in his shipmates, Harrison Daniels quietly lifts his lid and makes sure everyone is frozen in their pod…
In 31 years when they finally reach the asteroid belt they’ll wake up, but for now the coast is clear. He has the room to himself.
As there’s no oxygen being pumped into this part of the ship (since everyone is meant to be in their tank, frozen for the journey), Harrison quickly grabs a spare oxygen mask and climbs up onto the round windowsill overlooking the galaxy.
He’s not sure why he snuck out of his tank, but as he watches the distant field of stars stream by as the mining ship rockets along at lightspeed, he’s glad he did.
His mind struggles to comprehend the enormous scope of the galaxy stretched out before him, and while he feels a deep connection to it all, it also leaves him feeling totally insignificant. His problems, his worries… they couldn’t matter.
Thinking back, Harrison realizes he’s never actually been alone his entire life. Family, spouses, friends… and in 31 years when they reach the belt, he’ll never have a moment to himself. All he has is this, right now.
He tells himself that he has to do this again, somehow… for longer than just a few hours. It’s nice.
But, he has responsibilities still, and everyone will notice if they arrive at the asteroid belt and he’s the only one who has aged the 31 years (not to mention, he has no food— the hibernation tank is meant to nourish him as as they travel).
Taking one last long look out the window, Harrison gets back into his tank, and goes to sleep.

“Upon an Island Outside the Streams of Time”
Sick of being a slave to time’s forward motion
And stuck in its currents like an overflowing ocean
Eli Hampton built his own island, away from the grid of time
As the idea of living a timeless life seemed truly sublime.
From his island home, he sees time tangle and weave
The streams of parallel realities twisting in directions hard to conceive
And time flows with the ever present companions of rebirth and death,
Allowing Eli to watch endless generations live and take their last breath.
Happy to be free, Eli won’t hunger or age
He’ll lean against his palm tree and laugh at those in time’s cage
Experiencing nothing, but never having to live and/or die
Eli just gets to sit on his island, and watch the time drift right on by.
