The Daily Doodles |
My name is David Michael Chandler, and everyday I will post a Daily Doodle with a story attached to it. Everything you see here has been written, drawn, and coloured all on my lonesome. I hope you enjoy them, or die trying. Please E-mail anytime at thedailydoodles@gmail.com |
Hey everyone!
I recently did a fun interview with Make It Magazine; they’re a cool magazine made for and by the Malaysian maker community, and I was honoured to be a part of their new issue.
Hope I don’t sound too lame in the interview, and please check out the rest of the magazine! It’s perfect for any creatives or lovers-of-creativity all over the world.
HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND UNLESS YOU DIE SORRY.

“The Never Lonely Lonely Girl”
Dinah used to always worry that she’d end up alone,
Because she struggled to abandon her comfort zone.
Surrounded by books is where she felt right at home,
Many weekend nights spent poring over a new tome.
And while she has friends, she’s no one’s one and only
Despite no significant other, she never feels lonely.
Dinah felt she must be strange, must be mad as a hatter
But eventually she realized, “what the hell does it matter?”
So she loves books! And how can that be wrong?
Her literary tastes are varied, her comprehension strong.
Humans are well and good, but they will come and go.
A new book, however, is always a loyal n’ loving bedfellow.
Alone but not lonely, as books stay through the ages
If Dinah wants company, she just turns the pages.

“Books, Books, Everywhere”
She finds herself surrounded by books, as far as the eye can see
An ocean of literature, filled with possibility.
Finishing a book can be sad, but a new one is right there
Distracting from life’s problems, giving her a reason to care.
Reality can be pushed away, with the pages filled with text
As she absorbs the written word, trying to guess what’s next.
She’s not sure if she can read them all before the day she’ll die,
But she’s sure at the very least, that she’ll absolutely try.

“The Raindrops on the Window”
Young Chiara Adams puts her book down to watch the rain outside turn from a sprinkle into a downpour, as the droplets collect on her bedroom window.
The smell of rain wafts in even through the closed window, all fresh and cool and clean, while she hears the pitter patter of the rain drop on the roof soothingly… It’s perfect.
Years later, she’ll think back to how cozy she felt, how nice the combination of the rain and pajamas and a warm room and a good book was… but each time she tries to recreate it, the feelings fresh and idealized in her head, it simply isn’t right…
For whatever reason, it never feels the same.

“Just Another Day”
Caitlin Carpenter could feel the monster reading over her shoulder, almost STEALING the words off the page with its glare, but she refuses to give in… as soon as she turns around and acknowledges the monster’s presence, it will eat her.
She won’t let some words-stealing monster dictate HER fate.
Caitlin had planned to read all day today next to her trusty lamp-droid, and that is exactly what she is gonna do… she had no plans to live in fear of a warehouse-sized monster peering into her windows, and she wasn’t going to fit it into her packed reading schedule.
To her, this was just another day.

It didn’t used to be this way, but now each night it seems
That Nathaniel Watterson is The Boy Who No Longer Dreams.
Every time he closes his eyes and drifts off to sleep
He’s greeted by a darkness, so empty and so deep.
He used to fly through the air, maybe rescue girls from fires
Battle terrorists and bank robbers and other childlike desires.
But now there is nothing, just an anxious restless void
And when he wakes up he feels tired, angry and annoyed.
Perhaps it’s the assortment of pills the doctors make him swallow each day
Or maybe his burned out teachers restricting what he can think and/or say
His parents don’t listen when he tries to tell them about it all
They sigh “just don’t worry about it”, making him feel silly and small.
And while he may be young, he knows something is not right
Sleep time is when a child’s dreams should be able to take flight.
Nathaniel’s imagination is decaying; withered and sad.
Now he can’t even remember any of the dreams he once had.
The boy dreads going to bed, and every night is worse than before
Living a life without dreams is not a life worth living anymore.

Mr. and Mrs. Wayne and Isabella The Ghost, miserably married for 3 years now (and 4 years before the divorce), share another conversation-less long car ride to her horrible parent’s house.
Thankfully, they both like the same music, so the radio fills the gap their inability to communicate creates.
Having grown tired of talking to each other YEARS ago, their shared tastes in music, television, and film gives them a life raft that the relationship clings to… and totally obscures the fact that they otherwise have nothing in common.
Their entire marriage is the by-product of enjoying the same things that total strangers made, and tricking themselves into believing that this is some sort of genuine connection.
