The Daily Doodles |
My name is David Michael Chandler, and everyday I will post a Daily Doodle with a story attached to it. Everything you see here has been written, drawn, and coloured all on my lonesome. I hope you enjoy them, or die trying. Please E-mail anytime at thedailydoodles@gmail.com |
“7 Days a Week” a haiku.
It takes more each year
To make it okay to live,
Seven days a week.

“The Long Journey Across the Galaxy”
After hearing the hiss and click of the last hibernation tank as it pressurizes and seals in his shipmates, Harrison Daniels quietly lifts his lid and makes sure everyone is frozen in their pod…
In 31 years when they finally reach the asteroid belt they’ll wake up, but for now the coast is clear. He has the room to himself.
As there’s no oxygen being pumped into this part of the ship (since everyone is meant to be in their tank, frozen for the journey), Harrison quickly grabs a spare oxygen mask and climbs up onto the round windowsill overlooking the galaxy.
He’s not sure why he snuck out of his tank, but as he watches the distant field of stars stream by as the mining ship rockets along at lightspeed, he’s glad he did.
His mind struggles to comprehend the enormous scope of the galaxy stretched out before him, and while he feels a deep connection to it all, it also leaves him feeling totally insignificant. His problems, his worries… they couldn’t matter.
Thinking back, Harrison realizes he’s never actually been alone his entire life. Family, spouses, friends… and in 31 years when they reach the belt, he’ll never have a moment to himself. All he has is this, right now.
He tells himself that he has to do this again, somehow… for longer than just a few hours. It’s nice.
But, he has responsibilities still, and everyone will notice if they arrive at the asteroid belt and he’s the only one who has aged the 31 years (not to mention, he has no food— the hibernation tank is meant to nourish him as as they travel).
Taking one last long look out the window, Harrison gets back into his tank, and goes to sleep.
(A very special thanks to Kyle Harter for giffing this for me!)

“Nothing is Forever”
Tired of fighting with mom, and knowing that dad doesn’t really care
Ann had to be somewhere else, and it didn’t matter where.
So she runs away from home, going to the park right down the street,
She decides she just live here forever, and her life will be complete.
As the evening falls, blanketing Ann with the starlit night,
She looks up into the heavens, enjoying the galactic sight.
All those different worlds, it’s hard to fathom that it ever ends
The stars will always be there, unlike her family and friends.
But as Ann sees a shooting star quickly fade away and die,
She realizes nothing is forever, not even the stars in the sky.
Some of the twinkling lights above, are already dead and gone
Their worlds faded away to nothing, never waking to another dawn.
And one day in the future, the Andromeda Galaxy will swallow us whole
Even though it’s not for a while, Ann knows it’s out of our control.
Everything is temporary, even all of her problems and her fears,
Obsessing over the day to day almost seems like a waste of tears.
Even if the ‘now’ feels like forever, nothing will ever last
And everything that’s wrong today will tomorrow be in the past.
Ann breathes in the cool air, soothed by the night so vast and deep.
And when the sun finally rises, she sneaks back home to go to sleep.
(Thank you to Chiara from Doublethink Design for giffing this for me!)

“Alone in the Dark”
Henry was bad today, But he’s been good before
And each day ends the same… Nothing less, and nothing more.
No matter what Henry’s done, whether it was wrong or right
He still eats a nice dinner, and gets to sleep in his bed at night.
As long as he’s not caught, then he can do what he wants
And it’s really up to him, if he lets his conscience haunts.
‘Cuz, Santa still brought him presents, even if Santa ain’t really real
And it makes Henry sit alone in the dark, wondering what to feel.
SO, if it don’t matter what he do, and he gets rewarded either way
Then the game is rigged, and Henry knows he doesn’t have to play.

“The Sock Puppet is Silenced”
Spending it’s whole life controlled by someone else’s hand
The Sock Puppet’s thoughts were all meticulously pre-planned.
It was free to talk and see, but all it saw was approved
The Hand making sure that all nasty bits were removed.
But was it enough? Could the Puppeteer do more?
Sometimes the world out there was too hard to ignore :’-/
It would just confuse the poor Puppet to hear all those lies
So the kindly Puppeteer stitched shut the Sock’s mouth, ears, and eyes.
Now the tender Puppet need never worry about what is “out there”
It would just bother them anyways, and it’s pointless to care.
Finally free from it’s troubles, the blind mute Puppet goes to sleep
And the heroic Puppeteer kisses the forehead of it’s sweet lil’ sheep.

“The Inexorable March of Time”
Time moves slowly, when you’re a child
The free summers drag on, so sunny and mild
Yesterday was forever ago, and tomorrow is even worse
The wait for each birthday feels like a sinister curse.
Soon, the weeks become months, the months become years
Time slips by so quickly, and your memory smears
It all blends together, and you forget what it’s like
To feel time is endless, like when you were a tyke
Time moved slowly, when you were a kid
But soon all that you do, becomes all that you did.
It shouldn’t be frightening; time is all relative
While you can’t slow down your life, you can be sure to live.

“The Shocking True Story of a Person Who Doesn’t Know What They Want To Be”
Since all of her friends know what they want to do,
Sandra feels lost, because she doesn’t have a clue.
She likes lotsa stuff, but she can’t call any of it love
So she drifts aimlessly, waiting for a sign from above.
As the years amble by, she knows the crossroads are near
And the thought of choosing ONE thing fills her poor heart with fear.
But it’s time to make a choice, time to put the ol’ indecision on the shelf
Because for some reason you can’t spend your life just being yourself.
One must be defined by their job and career,
Otherwise your identity would be vague and unclear.
Work is what you is, and who you are about
Being just you would fill everyone with doubt.
So, she allows herself to be shackled by the chains of society,
Even though simply being happy is all Sandra wants to be.

Henry “Buck” Chambers looks down at the dead body of his old Army buddy Charlie Gooding, and thinks to himself… did Charlie achieve his dreams? Did he die happy? He hadn’t talked to him in years, after all, and they hardly discussed such things when they were in contact.
Buck has been to a lot of these funerals over the years— in fact, he knows that this is the very last funeral he feels obligated to attend (until his own, of course), because Charlie’s death means that every known family member, friend, and even slight acquaintance of Buck’s is now dead.
There’s no one else left. Everyone he ever knew, is gone.
As he stares into the pale, overly-make-up’d dead face of the last person alive he ever knew, the full impact of what this all means begins to dawn on ol’ Buck, and all he can think of is one thing…
“I win.”
