“The Shadows in the Dark”
As long as Harry can remember, all through his childhood years,
There lived a Shadow in his bedroom, that feasted upon his fears.
Hiding in the darkness, yet darker than the pitch black night
The Shadow was always moving, forever staying just out of sight.
In the corner of his eye, he can see the Shadow creep
It’s prolly because Harry’s been bad, and for his sins he’ll reap.
He can never quite look at it, though he’ll always try,
And he knows that the night he falls asleep, is the night he’ll die.
Savouring in his terror, the Shadow breathes in Harry’s soul
And year after year of staying awake, eventually takes its toll.
Struggling with all his might, Harry finally feels his eyes close,
And the Shadow smothers him from his head down to his toes.
The last thing Harry sees, as his soul is stolen at last
Is the shapeless void of darkness, filled with sins of the past.
And the last thing that he feels, is an endless sense of dread
Echoed by his mother’s screams, as she finds him dead in bed.

“The Near Death Experience”
The familiar feeling of a fistful of pills festering in her stomach dissipates away to a strange airy lightness as she feels her body float up from her bed.
Did it work? Is it all over?
…It had to be enough this time.
She feels herself float up and up for what seems like ages, the void of blackness finally giving way to the gentle twinkling of stars above her. She looks down, and while she can still see her bed below, she also notices that she’s wearing her favourite dress from when she was 8… she hasn’t seen that dress in decades, not since the garage sale before the second move.
And the shoes! The shoes she wanted for Christmas and never got! The ruby red ballerina shoes, oh she wanted them so bad…! It seems like such a small thing to dream about now, but back then…
She wishes she could want something like that again, just once more.
Expecting the soothing golden light to welcome her to the afterlife, or at least some relatives she is meant to have loved greeting her, she waits nervously for something to happen…
The gentle twinkling of the stars above starts to slightly unnerve her, as their twinkling begins to feel… oppressive somehow. Ominous. Even though she is seemingly floating in place, she can feel the stars coming closer, somehow mocking her…
Each sparkle of the stars blasts within her head now, ricocheting around her brain, and she can feel the presence of fully formed thoughts planted directly in her mind. They weren’t said with words or sentences, but simply concepts, ideas that she can’t quite articulate out loud…
But she knows now, that this is all a joke. Everything.
Everything she ever knew, loved, or cared about, is all a joke. None of it is real. And the fact that we think it is real, she realizes, makes it all the funnier. It’s a massive prank pulled on all of humankind.
And none of it matters. Life, death… nothing.
But the punchline, she knows, is that she hilariously feels like she wants to live now… despite being in on the joke. She can’t explain why, but she can feel that want inside of her… even if only distantly.
Suddenly, she’s lurched back into her body as she finds herself violently throwing up the mix of half-digested tablets and capsules, along with the still-cold ice water she had washed the pills down with. Only a few moments must have passed, she thinks to herself, as she slumps into a wretched pile on her bathroom floor.
In stark contrast to her other attempts, this time she keeps it secret. She doesn’t want the forced sympathy it brings.
And while she can sense the heavens mocking her inside her mind’s eye for the rest of her life, it’s fine… she knows they’re just as big of a joke as she is.

“Late Night TV”
Creeping down the hallway,
He turns on the television quietly.
After everyone has gone to bed,
He looks at what they don’t want him to see.
The real education starts after hours,
So at boring stupid school he does awfully…
But he’ll learn everything he ever needs to know,
Thanks to watching Late Night TV.

“If You Don’t Eat All Your Candy, Ghosts Will Pop Out Your Eye”
IF YOU DON’T EAT ALL YOUR CANDY, ghosts will pop out your eye
And if ya can’t stop the bleeding then you will surely die.
So take your bag full of all your nummy Halloween treats
And don’t go to sleep till ya got none more to eats.
When parents check in on you, just tell them that you’re fine
An eye-out is no biggie, and parents hate it when ya whine
If ya let the candy last a few days, it may be your last regret
And don’t you dare stop even when your tummy is upset
It’s not only your eye at stake, but also your immortal soul
Every piece of candy not ate tonight will ultimately take its toll
But ya know, if ya fail, it’s not really all that bad
After the ghosts pop out your eye, they eat your mom and dad.
You’ll wear an eye patch from now on, but you’ll have a story to tell
And when you’re eighty and ya pass away, you’ll be the coolest kid in hell.
Happy Halloween!

“The Boy Who Died in His Sleep”
Jeremy tries to scream to force himself awake,
He knows that even if this is all a dream, this is not fake
A portal to the Inter-Dimension has opened under his bed
And it’s absorbing him whole, invading the dreams in his head.
The colours swarm all around, filling his entire brain’s sight
Surrounded on all sides, Jeremy tries valiantly to put up a fight
But the Inter-Dimension can’t be fought with a tiny human fist,
Since it fills the gaps between realities, and doesn’t really “exist”.
With each universe ever expanding, the Inter-Dimension has holes
Which it plugs by absorbing children, and stealing their souls
If no sleeping boys died, the universe would cease to be
A child’s death is needed to maintain the Fabric of Reality.
But when the morning comes, his mother will still weep
For this night it was just Jeremy’s turn to die in his sleep.

“The Monster in the Attic”
(A Classique Doodle from 9/11/2011)
Clifford wasn’t sure what it was, or whence it did came
Why, the Monster in the Attic didn’t even have a name.
It demanded the boy feed it babies, and if Clifford didn’t comply
The beast would eat his parents, and his entire family would die.
So Clifford brought it some infants; but only just a few!
He didn’t want to lose his family, so what else could he do?
He felt guilty stealing newborns, but rationalized it away
They were only stupid babies, and he “had” to obey!
But soon a baby a week became several each night
And Clifford only wishes that he had put up a fight
And not let the problem get to this advanced stage
But now that he has, he feels trapped in a cage.
While it’s easier to keep going than to right all his wrongs
It doesn’t solve anything; the problem only prolongs.
So the Monster gets bigger, as Young Clifford feeds it still
He knows he has to stop… but he just doesn’t have the will.

“The Boy Who Was Born at Midnight”
(A Classique Doodle from 1/1/2012)
Every child born at midnight, can see inter-dimensional creatures
Glowing blobs of paraphysical energy, with no humanlike features.
They live alongside us on Earth, our dimension parallel with theirs’
And they seem less than enthused, at the Boy’s confused stares.
Our simple brains can’t comprehend, their motives or desires.
They enjoy playing with the human race, and watching what transpires.
Existing between time and space, toying with our lives
And they hate being seen, so no child born at midnight survives.
The creatures approach the poor boy’s bed, and start melting his brain
As easy as it is for us to squish a bug, they drive him totally insane.

“Navigating the Treacherous and Political Waters of Friendship”
Pat Terrio isn’t allowed to like Steve (even though he seems like an alright dude) since Steve used to date Abby (who is now dating his friend Ryan), and therefore all past suitors of Abby have become persona non grata and he is forced to befriend both Angela (a woman he can’t stand) and Alan (a man who is unbearably dull) due to them working in positions of influence at Pat’s girlfriend’s place of employ and he has become aware that he must distance himself from Danny (a longtime friend) due to Danny making an off-colour joke at a party thrown by Pat’s friend Kaycee (a more recent friend) who he now must placate and feign shared disgust at the joke said by Danny so as to stay in Kaycee’s good graces as Kaycee’s family has a beach cabin that Pat hoped to visit and he must individually invite Mallorie, Hector, and Tony (co-worker friends) to go have drinks later tonight even though Mallorie, Hector, and Tony would never go have drinks but Pat must indulge in the charade of inviting them because they will be hopelessly distraught by the grievous insult of not being invited to something they’d never go to and he must prevent the trio from becoming disgruntled with his friendship and working against him behind the scenes and it all leads Pat to wonder why he even bothers having friends in the first place.
The only solution is to murder them all, since then he will be free to hang out with Steve, and Steve seems like an alright dude.

“The Shadow in the Darkness”
Even in the darkness, Jason Drummond can see it breathing.
Somehow darker than even the inky blackness of his bedroom, the shadow’s slight movements as its torso menacingly breathes in and out betray its stillness.
Night after night, the shadow stands there… just watching. And each night, Jason stares back, the tiny hairs on his neck tingling, as he tries to convince himself it’s just a trick of the light.
While it has no eyes, Jason feels like the shadow is staring straight into his soul.
Trapped in its gaze, unable to look away, his head grows increasingly lightheaded and blurry as he feels the shadow inside his own mind, its presence expanding through Jason’s consciousness…
The dead silence is broken as a car drives down the quiet suburban street, its headlights shining through the window.
After the car passes, Jason’s eyes adjust to the dark again… but the shadow is gone.
