“Nothing is Forever”

Tired of fighting with mom, and knowing that dad doesn’t really care
Ann had to be somewhere else, and it didn’t matter where.
So she runs away from home, going to the park right down the street,
She decides she just live here forever, and her life will be complete.

As the evening falls, blanketing Ann with the starlit night,
She looks up into the heavens, enjoying the galactic sight.
All those different worlds, it’s hard to fathom that it ever ends
The stars will always be there, unlike her family and friends.

But as Ann sees a shooting star quickly fade away and die,
She realizes nothing is forever, not even the stars in the sky.
Some of the twinkling lights above, are already dead and gone
Their worlds faded away to nothing, never waking to another dawn.

And one day in the future, the Andromeda Galaxy will swallow us whole
Even though it’s not for a while, Ann knows it’s out of our control.
Everything is temporary, even all of her problems and her fears,
Obsessing over the day to day almost seems like a waste of tears.

Even if the ‘now’ feels like forever, nothing will ever last
And everything that’s wrong today will tomorrow be in the past.

Ann breathes in the cool air, soothed by the night so vast and deep.
And when the sun finally rises, she sneaks back home to go to sleep.

There once was a girl who wanted to do well,
But she was scared of failure, so she’s stuck in a Hell
Of procrastination and excuses, since she’s afraid to commit
And these simple facts are something she’d never admit.

So she dibble dabbles in this and that, but it’s all the same
Never finishing anything she starts, and only she is to blame
Cuz’ to fail at a sincere effort, is her greatest fear
So she hides behind cynicism, year after year…

If she never attempts anything, then she’ll never be judged
Living in her cocoon of passivity, where she’ll never be budged
Hopefully someday she’ll decide to finally TRY,

“The Orbit of the Burial Moon”

It’s been 3 years since The Boy Who Was Born in Space buried his parents on that tiny moon, and for the third time in those 3 years, the Boy has found himself somehow crossing paths with the moon yet again… even though the Boy, his Robot, and their ship should be hundreds of parsecs away.

While at first the Boy assumed that he was subconsciously going in circles because some part of him wasn’t yet ready to leave his parents behind (the spaceship’s onboard educational videos he’s been watching have led him to believe this was a possibility), his Droid quickly calculated that the moon was actually a tiny orphan planet; a rogue planetary mass that wandered the galaxy with no set orbit, and its path through space had happened to correspond with their own.

However, now the burial moon has entered an actual orbit as the tiny spheroid gets pulled between the gravity of a distant gas giant and a nearby red terrestrial planet, causing the moon to complete a dizzying full orbit every 31 seconds.

His parent’s final resting place had finally found a home.

The Boy knew that one might indulge themselves in believing there was some sort of poetic significance in discovering that his parents’ burial moon was an orphan (just like the Boy himself is), but his more logical side knew that the universe is simply a series of events without meaning, and this was just one of them.

The parallels between him and the burial moon are a mildly interesting curiosity, but crafting some sort of life narrative out of random chance… it’s folly.

The Boy finds himself wishing that it WAS his subconscious bringing him back to the Burial Moon over and over, because then at least it’d show he’s feeling something for them… like a normal boy. It’d be nice to know he missed them, on some level, and that perhaps his parents’ burial moon finding a home could be a good omen for himself.

But, he knows that the galaxy doesn’t exist just to give one Boy’s life “meaning”. The universe doesn’t work that way.

The Boy Who Was Born in Space joins his Droid back on their ship, and never returns to the burial moon ever again.

“The Many Faces”

Jason Frye wears many faces, one for each role he plays
Some of them he wears for friends, or during his school days
Others he’ll wear for work, perhaps for people he doesn’t know
And some of them are faces he hates, and is a blow to his ego.

In his mind’s eye, he sees himself as his practiced face in front of mirrors
Secretly his private worry is that it’s not how he really appears.
What if everyone can spot his flaws, the ones only he is able to see?
Then they’d know the face is a lie, and the thought makes him want to flee.

But until that day he’ll stay in place and wear the face that suits him best,
Only show what he wants others to see, and no one gets shown the rest.

“The Blank Tape” Simón Martínez presses his nose...

“The Blank Tape”

Simón Martínez presses his nose against the TV’s monitor, his hot breath fogging the glass, as he tries to position his face as close to the television screen as humanly possible.

He remembers doing this during his bored moments as a child, thinking he may find something secret being broadcast that he’d miss if he was watching from the couch like a regular person.

The static fills the screen with its never-ending frenetic dance, never stopping to stay still even for a moment. Simón focuses on just one black or white dot, trying to track its trail as it hops wildly across the screen, but each time he loses the poor thing as the rest of the static overwhelms it.

Having found this blank VHS tape in an ancient box that he forgot he ever had, Simón hoped there was some sort of lost treasure from his childhood recorded on the cassette… but nope. Just static. He guesses he was saving it to record something special, something special that never came.

But still, for whatever reason, he actually likes it this way. The static is somehow soothing, filling his field of vision with the endless movement while the white noise quietly hisses on and on.

The magnetic tape inside the cassette *snaps*, and Simón hears the gears of the VCR grind to a halt as it struggles to eject the broken VHS. The picture goes black.

Simón unwinds the magnetic tape from around the VCR’s reels, the strip crinkling in his hands, and throws the useless blank tape away.

Do you allow submission stories, like, sending you a link or a story you might like?

Sure, anyone can send me anything! A link, a drawing they did, their story, whatever. Just use my “Submit” link to send me sumthin’ (it’s on the home page of my site, next to the “Ask”).

HOWEVER (and my Submit page goes over this), everything on my site is written and drawn by me only and I only, only, only will be posting my own work. So if the goal is to get me to post someone else’s work (like, someone else’s words and my drawerin’), I really can’t do that.

I love checking out people’s sites though! Especially if they create their own content. I am an Editor here on Tumblr for the #Illustration, #GIF, and #Artists on Tumblr tags, and every day I always make a point to feature people who I’ve never seen featured before.

Please feel free to point me in your direction to check out your work, or ask me any questions you may have.

If ya ain’t sure how the “Editor” program works, and what “features” are, here is the short explanation—

There are dozens of “official” tags on Tumblr, such as #Fashion, #LOL, #Science, #GIF, etc etc. Each official tag has Editors, and the Editors are chosen by the staff of Tumblr.

Each Editor gets 10 features a day in each tag they edit for. So, for example, since I edit 3 categories, I get 30 total features. When an Edtitor “features” a post, it goes to the Explore section of Tumblr, under the corresponding tag it was featured under.

Being featured helps give your work exposure, and possibly a chance at appearing on the Tumblr Radar (that is also chosen by the staff of Tumblr, but I don’t know any specifics). It’s basically a great way to get your work noticed by people who don’t follow your site, and to gain new loyal followers.

One of my favourite sites, Stranger Dimensions, did an awesome write up about me and my site!

It was a very nice surprise, as I actually do read Stranger Dimensions daily when new posts are delivered to my Gmail each night, and about a week ago I was scrolling down the newest email, reading about many of the weird, paranormal, science-y news they report on, when suddenly I saw one of my drawings! :-o I certainly wasn’t expecting it.

If you’re into news about scientific discovery, time travel, ghosts, aliens, the paranormal, and basically everything cool and fun that is known and unknown in the universe, I think you’d love Stranger Dimensions too.

(And also, if you’re like me and you grew up listening to Coast to Coast AM, I KNOW you’d love Stranger Dimensions).

“Light as a Ghost”

Lil’ Dennis Nowell was afraid of the deep dark at night
The mystery of the blackness always gave him a fright
While he eventually grew out of it, he always remembered the fears
And how those long sleepless nights ruined his childhood years

Soooo, after he became a Big Dennis Nowell, and lived a long life
And died peacefully in his sleep and was buried alongside his wife,
He decided to turn into a ghost, as opposed to heading up to Heaven
So he could travel back in time, to about the age he was seven.

In the afterlife, time is not in a straight line
It happens all at once, knotted up like twine
Dennis carefully worked to unravel time’s thread,
So he could return to the time he was a child scared in bed.

Now he haunts himself every night, casting his ghostly blue glow
His ectoplasmatic shimmer providing a calming light show.
It soothes his child-self, who is no longer afraid of the dark so deep
He can just stare at himself as a ghost, and peacefully drift off to sleep.

“Life in the Backseat”

Leaning her head against the cool glass of the window, Hannah drifts in and out of a hazy, bored sleep as she sits in the backseat of her parents car, returning home after a long weekend at grandma’s.

Grandma wasn’t the same this time, and after catching the bits and pieces of her parents hushed whispers to each other, Hannah knew they noticed it too.

Staring out at the mountains in the distance, Hannah wonders what it must feel like to have your brain slowly fade away… not being able to remember your family, friends, or even who you are… it could be what Hell feels like.

The mountains she was blankly staring at come into focus, as she realizes that settlers once had to cross those towering peaks on foot… a thought hard to fathom as Hannah and her family speed past these mountains without a second thought from the safety and comfort of a heated car.

She wonders if she would have survived that trip if she was alive back then… maybe she did die in those mountains, in some past life, since she simply wasn’t made for those times.

And maybe she isn’t made for these times, either. Maybe it was some cosmic mistake, being born now… and if the world ends tomorrow, could this be the last life she gets? Does everything start over? Does time stop if there are no humans to notice it?

Ah, but there’s Aliens I guess… they’d prolly notice it. Hmm…

Her grandma’s hugs even seemed different this time… as if it was just a reaction of her grandma’s muscle memory, with no feeling or affection behind it.

Hannah slips into a dream, standing in her grandma’s living room, searching for her toys that are apparently lost… and her grandma is coming down the hall. Slowly.

For whatever reason, Hannah feels like she must escape with her toys before her grandma catches her there. She can’t see her, but Hannah can feel her presence looming, coming ever closer…

It all seems so empty.

Hannah wakes up to her dad’s voice letting her know they’re home so she needs to put her shoes back on, and the thoughts from the drive fade away.

“Defragmenting the Brain”

Horrible memories next to good means the two often commingle.
You wish to remember a nice moment, but get that uneasy tingle.
Pleasant nostalgia ruined by things you wish you could erase.
Forgetting is usually impossible, but brains have a lot of open space.

Simply defragment your brain, store the dark memories to the side,
In the empty unused portions of the mind, you put them to hide.
There they can’t bug you, or infest what you wish to recall,
No more pausing on past regrets, slowing your brain to a crawl.

You’ll live happier not remembering anything that made you sad.
Filled with confidence knowing that you never did anything bad.
While over time that data may leak out, and flashes break through,
Just defragment your brain again, and you’ll never have to be you.

“There Ain’t No Laws in Space”

Did you ever know that there ain’t no laws in space?
You could lure your enemy to the moon, and shoot them in the face.
If the police try to hassle ya, tell ‘em they got no jurisdiction!
They have no right to interfere with your murderous predilection

So blow up a hospital on Venus, or rob a bank on Mars
Run over Jupiter’s orphans while driving stolen cars
If there’s no laws to stop ya, then it must be quite alright!
No need to hide your fiendish crimes each and every night.

And even God will be proud that you found this loophole
His rules only apply to Earth, so don’t worry about your soul
With a sly wink and a nod, God will look the other way
Just stay forever in outer space, and you’ll never have to pay.

“Orbiting the New World”

With his exploration and reconnaissance ship having safely entered into low orbit around the planet, Simon Reynolds floats into the observation deck to take a better look at humankind’s new home.

The lush landscape rolls by quickly, and the familiar Earth-like features of savannas, oceans, beaches, mountains, forests, rivers… it all helps calm Simon’s worries about the mass exodus from Earth and the subsequent re-habitation to take place over the next 50 years. Everyone will love this new world.

To make it fit for human life, though, a quick and painless culling of the native population will have to take place; preferably before the media back home learn of the planet and begin calling the new world a “name” (it’s always harder to get away with the necessary genocide if the bleeding hearts back home can have a catchy name to call the natives). Such things are best done quickly, and aren’t usually fit for public consumption.

Most just don’t have the stomach for the realities of the situation, is all.

Soon after Simon’s strategically targeted cleansing implantations (such as infecting the main sources of drinking water, the soil the crops are grown in, and the animals that the natives interact with the most), the planet will be blanketed with carefully refined Earth-diseases that the natives have no natural antibodies for— and after a few years, the indigenous human-like population of the new world will be down to a manageable level and Simon and the Intergalactic Settlement Company can begin building the first settlements and outposts without worrying about the inconvenience of a native reprisal.

It’s all standard operating procedure, of course, to prevent trouble down the road. If they’re lucky enough to eliminate the natives entirely, that’d be great, but Simon knows it’s more likely that they’ll have to engage in an aggressive media campaign that downplays the genocide-y aspects of the cleansing and focuses mostly on the necessity of preparing a foreign planet’s environment for future human settlements.

The only real problem Simon can see is a somewhat obvious one: while the untouched virgin beauty of the undeveloped planet seems nice in theory, modern humans don’t actually like things quite this “rustic”. They’ll have to clear many of these forests and green valleys that look so beautiful from the cozy view of an orbiting spaceship if the Earthlings are gonna have the infrastructure they’ve become accustomed to.

It may be rough at first, but after several generations of hard work and intensive modernizing of the new world’s natural environment, Simon knows in his heart that any remaining natives will have the good sense to be thankful for all of this.

In the end, it’s all for the best.

“The Boy Who Was Born With Burnt Out Eyes”

The boy who was born with scabby burnt out eyes,
Hears his mom tell him he’s handsome, but it’s nothing but lies.
She shrieked when he was born, and tried to throw him away
But the boy followed her home, and since has been able to stay.

With no limbs and no nose, he often angrily feels shorted
Every Christmas he asks Santa if he can just be aborted.
But each year he wakes up, and wobbles down the stair
And doesn’t unwrap the gift of death, because Santa doesn’t care :’-/

His head is misshapened, with the puckered skin of a fish
Kids throw coins in his mouth, and then make a wish.
To stay cool in the summers, he secretes a radioactive blue ooze
And his existence was slammed by the local news.

No matter how bad it gets, he never stops and asks himself “why?”
And that’s because he’s a sissy, and the idea makes him cry.
The only logical conclusion is that he’s being punished for a past life
Where he cut the heads off of orphans, and punched his common-law wife.

So each night he dreams, as his mom locks him back up in his cage
That some day he can take advantage of all of this pent up rage.
It won’t be with this body, but he’ll make them all come unfurled…
He’ll just have to wait till his next life till he can murder the world.

“The Boy Who Isn’t Really All That Special”

Danny walks down the hallway, into the living room
Everyone is fast asleep, but Danny is filled with doom and gloom
He may not ever realize, but his subconscious already knows
That’s he’s just really not that special, and it obviously shows.

Even though he’s only seven, it’s still abundantly clear
That he ain’t curing any disease, or winning Boy of the Year.
No society changing inventions will come from his average mind,
And his thoughts and/or opinions will never alter the course of humankind.

He doesn’t know that yet, and he’ll always be told a lie
That he’s a unique snowflake, and a special lil’ guy.
He’ll belabour under this myth for a lifetime’s worth of years,
Living an average life filled with average happiness and tears.

But does it really matter if Danny isn’t the special-est guy on Earth?
And the world won’t feel any impact from his death or birth?
Because if EVERYONE is special, then no one really is
Each person has their role to play, and being Un-Special is his.
