"The Final Moment"
Peeking over the blankie, you can see once again they’re there
Waiting to take you home, with that hypnotic red-eyed stare.
The storm roars outside as the lightning flashes like a strobe,
Revealing three featureless faces, each wearing a rotted robe.
Their fetid stench fills your nose, as if they’re sacks of rotting meat
You realize that’s all you are as well; a walking bacterial treat.
Trying to catch your breath, and not succumb to chaotic fear,
You sense they even pity you, because your end is near.
The truth just feels so awful, so you try to come up with a pretty lie
That perhaps this is all a dream, and you aren’t about to die
You can fool yourself for a moment, but a moment will never last
And now you are dwelling upon all the time lost in your past.
You ask them if you ever mattered; was your life a joke?
Was there a point to it all, now that you’re about to croak?
The creatures show you a final kindness, and never answer you back
But you wonder if it was all worth it, as everything fades to black.
