“The Day After Christmas”
Tommy Crawford, still grouchy from a sleep deprived Christmas day, stands in his doorway and stares at his brand spanking new CPK-2011… the exact robot he asked for, the only present he told everyone he wanted, and the key to being a happy boy for the rest of his days.
He remembers the weeks leading up to Christmas, wishing, hoping, PRAYING (he figured pretending to be religious for a few weeks couldn’t hurt) that the big box under the tree was the latest CPK robot-companion, the one that made all previous CPKs looking like piles of junk.
He could barely even look at his CPK-2009 without getting angry… the thought of having to play with it for even one more day! Like a hobo! It made him want to puke.
As he raced downstairs and ripped open the wrapping paper before his parents could even make their coffee, all of the angst and worry melted away— he got the CPK-2011. Maybe there was a God.
He waited impatiently for his siblings to open their presents, and then he spent the rest of the day programming the Robot for optimum friendship before passing out from exhaustion.
Now, it’s the day after Christmas, and even though he got exactly what he wanted, when he wanted it, he feels empty. Depressed. But he can’t explain why. It makes no sense.
He halfheartedly plays some 3-D checkers with the CPK-2011, but it’s not helping. Not willing to admit defeat, though, he continues to play with his new robot for 8 more hours, and making a big show of it when his parents check in on him.
He’ll continue to force himself to play with the CPK-2011 constantly for a few more weeks, feeling just as empty each night.
